I had 11 heifers and 9 steers in my neighbor’s feed lot from Feb. 8 to Aug. 21. All of them were sired by my BueLingo Bulls and nearly all of the cows were at least 50% BueLingo. The calves weighted in at 580# and out at 1155#. It was a 196 day feeding period. They averaged 575# of gain. (2.93# per day.) All feed was weighed.
The ration was the same all the way from start to finish. It consisted of:
- All the whole shelled corn they wanted;
- Golden Sun brand “Beef & Bulk” supplement fed at 1.81# per day;
- 5# corn glueten pellets.;
- 2 small hay bales per grinder of mixed feed.
No hay is required with the supplement, but I ground the hay anyway. Salt and mineral blocks were fed free choice but they ate very little of either one.
Pricing corn at $1.68 a bushel, the total feed cost was $167.14 per head. That figures out being 29 cents per# of gain. I paid feedlot owner 25 cents per head per day. Total feed and yardage cost was 37.5 cents per # of gain. At selling time they were not removed from feed or water and they dressed 63.9%. I am very happy with these results.
